Mideast ‘deal’ in no one’s interest

As a Zionist who longs for peace in the Middle East, which requires a fair and just settlement for both Jews and Palestinians in Israel and Palestine, I am dismayed by President Barack Obama’s unprincipled “deal” to restart peace talks.
The expansion of settlements is like poison in the well of goodwill. How can Palestinians sustain the hope of peace when a brief settlement freeze — that does not even include East Jerusalem — is exchanged for more military power? After 90 days, the freeze will be over and no constraints on expansion into what must become Palestinian territory will remain.

في ربيع 1882، أرسل والي حلب عارف باشا رجال الشرطة إلى منزل المفكر النهضوي عبدالرحمن الكواكبي، حيث ادعوا أنهم وجدوا بين أوراقه ورقة صغيرة تفيد بأنه يخابر بريطانيا العظمى ليسلمها البلاد. واتُّهِم الكواكبي بالتخابر مع دولة عدوة، فحكمت عليه محكمة عثمانية سورية بالإعدام. استأنف الكواكبي الحكم، وطلب نقل المحاكمة إلى بيروت، وقام بالترافع عن نفسه، حيث أصدر قاضي بيروت حكماً ببراءة الكواكبي، بعد أن تبين أن الورقة كانت مزورة ومدسوسة بين أوراق المفكر الكبير. أطلق سراح الكواكبي، ولكن المفاجأة كانت في اللحظة التي وصل الكواكبي إلى حلب، تلقى الوالي قراراً من الآستانة بعزله.

Q and A with Haleh Esfandiari

At Christmas time in 2006, Haleh Esfandiari was visiting her mother in Tehran when she was robbed, detained, and finally arrested on charges of plotting against Iranian national security. The then-67-year old journalist and scholar (she is the director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.) spent four months in solitary confinement at the notorious Evin Prison before a tremendous international outcry spurred her release. Esfandiari’s keenly written account of her experience, My Prison, My Home: One Woman’s Story of Captivity in Iran (Ecco) is both an affecting study of personal dignity—under constant threat of a show trial, Esfandiari had no way of knowing if she would ever be released—and a window onto President Ahmadinejad’s distorted world view. Via E-mail, Vogue’s Megan O’Grady interviewed Esfandiari, who holds both American and Iranian citizenship, to find out how the experience continues to shape her, and why women are crucial to shaping a future Iran.
