It is our view that
Syria is worth an ad hoc local partnership given its idiosyncratic
situation: it is quite developed but seriously under-invested by
foreign investors; on one hand it is about to sign a wide ranging
Agreement with the European Union while on the other sanctions are
being put in place against it by the United States; and it is
undergoing gradual political changes - often hampered by
bureaucratic inertia - within a geopolitical environment that
remains tense. In other words, Syria is exactly the type of country
with significant business development potential where local
knowledge and contacts are of paramount importance for
foreign operators and investors.
